We thank Dr. Kaciroti for his illuminating comments regarding the Overall Burden Measure
(OBM).
1
We proposed the quantitative OBM metric as an alternative means of making county-level
comparisons of injury (or disease) burden.
2
Similar to age-adjusted rates, the OBM can account for differences in age structure
between counties. However, rather than using the age structure of an arbitrary external
population, the OBM uses the county itself as its own reference population. This addresses
a well-known limitation of age-adjusted rates.
