      We thank Dr. Kaciroti for his illuminating comments regarding the Overall Burden Measure (OBM).

      We proposed the quantitative OBM metric as an alternative means of making county-level comparisons of injury (or disease) burden.

      Z-score burden metric: a method for assessing burden of injury and disease.
      Similar to age-adjusted rates, the OBM can account for differences in age structure between counties. However, rather than using the age structure of an arbitrary external population, the OBM uses the county itself as its own reference population. This addresses a well-known limitation of age-adjusted rates.
