Prioritizing Research to Reduce Youth Suicide and Suicidal Behavior
The goal of the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention is to reduce suicide and suicide attempts in the U.S. by 40% in the next decade. In this paper, a public health approach is applied to suicide prevention to illustrate how reductions in youth suicide and suicidal behavior might be achieved by prioritizing research in two areas: (1) increasing access to primary care–based behavioral health interventions for depressed youth and (2) improving continuity of care for youth who present to emergency departments after a suicide attempt.Screening Youth for Suicide Risk in Medical Settings: Time to Ask Questions
This paper focuses on the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention’s Research Prioritization Task Force’s Aspirational Goal 2 (screening for suicide risk) as it pertains specifically to children, adolescents, and young adults. Two assumptions are forwarded: (1) strategies for screening youth for suicide risk need to be tailored developmentally; and (2) we must use instruments that were created and tested specifically for suicide risk detection and developed specifically for youth. Recommendations for shifting the current paradigm include universal suicide screening for youth in medical settings with validated instruments.Suicide Risk Screening and Assessment: Designing Instruments with Dissemination in Mind
This paper summarizes recommendations made regarding the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention Research Prioritization Task Force’s Aspirational Goal 2, to “determine the degree of suicide risk (e.g., imminent, near-term, long-term) among individuals in diverse populations and in diverse settings through feasible and effective screening and assessment approaches.” We recommend that researchers shift to using “design for dissemination” principles to maximize both the goodness of fit and validity of screening and assessment measures for a given setting.
